Martin G. Matkins passed from this life on August 30, 2026, at his home at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer. He was born on September 12, 1960, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Eugene and Vada Matkins. Marty was an instantly likeable person. Everyone loved Marty as soon as they met him. He enjoyed playing darts and spending time with friends. An accomplished musician, he loved collecting and playing the guitar and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Most recently, Marty developed a new passion for collecting minor league baseball caps. Marty never had any children of his own, but he loved his role as dad and Papa to the daughters and grandchildren of his wife, Laura. He embraced his family and cherished the relationships he shared with them. He was preceded in death by his mother, Vada, and his grandparents. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Laura; his father, Eugene Matkins; his sisters, Amy (Gary) Huckwell and Cindy Caldwell; his daughters, Kelly (Robert) North, Kristin Ray, and Rebecca Ray; his grandchildren, Hunter Myers, Dillon (Caroline) Myers, Mikalah Sims, Aubrey North, Kaleel Burnett, Kalaiya Barnes, and Keelee Burnett; his great-grandchildren, Rylee Myers, Walker Myers, and Charlotte Myers; his nephew, Thomas (Kimmie) Cates; great-nephew, Malachi Cates; great-niece, Maylee Vada Cates; and his silly fur babies Bentley, Max, and Snowball. Marty will be remembered for his love of music, his friendships, his sense of family, and the many lives he touched along the way. He had a way of making people feel welcome and loved, and his presence will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. His life here on earth may have ended, but we rest in assurance that he was welcomed into Heaven by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Marty loved The Lord deeply, and as a result, loved all people deeply as well. The love he gave and the memories he created will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Rest easy, Marty. You fought a long and courageous battle. You are deeply loved, forever missed, and will never be forgotten.
Visitation for Marty will be held on Sunday, September 6th, 2026 from 4:00pm – 6:00pm at Kilgore Funeral Home. A service to celebrate his life will follow at 6:00pm with Dan Cheatham officiating.
