One current student and three former students have joined a lawsuit against Sewanee, the University of the South. There are now eleven current or former student plaintiffs on the lawsuit.
On Friday, Oct. 3, an amended complaint was filed in a lawsuit alleging negligence against Sewanee for allowing students to live in a mold-infested dorm. A total of 10 plaintiffs joined the lawsuit, four of whom were students or former students. The lawsuit now reports damages over $35 million, an increase from the original complaint’s report of over $20 million in damages.
The students joining the lawsuit are Reagan Nash, Alexa Bailey, Camille Gandy, and Ava Hines. Nash and Gandy are graduates of the university, Hines is a current student, and Bailey transferred to American University after attending Sewanee for her freshman year.
Like the original plaintiffs, Nash, Bailey, Gandy, and Hines lived in Johnson Hall–a dorm evacuated by the university in October 2024 due to high levels of toxic mold. In the amended complaint, they report symptoms similar to the original plaintiffs. They report that these symptoms began when they moved to Johnson Hall.
These symptoms include respiratory distress, anxiety, nose bleeds, unexplained fatigue, and sudden fevers. These can be symptoms of mold toxicity.
The amended complaint also reports poor maintenance in Cleveland Hall, McCrady Hall, and the Barnwell Apartments, other on campus student housing options at the university.
Most notably, Nash reported flea and raccoon infestations in the Barnwell Apartments where she shared a room with fellow plaintiff, Cassie Nicotera.
